Gospel Materialities gathers together scholars and pratictioners interested in the archive and repertoire of gospel and Black religious traditions. Our digital humanities site fosters multi-media and interdisciplinary explorations of the history, aesthetics, and performativities of modern gospel. We are principally interested in the study of investigations of the material culture produced by, and which helped produce what historian and musicologist Mark Burford calls “the gospel field.” This project is an outgrowth of The Gospel Materialities Working Group, an affiliated group of the Rutgers University Center for Cultural Analysis (CCA).
